Malcolmia (Virginia Stock)
  Malcolmia maritima
Back to Index

Malcolmia is an unusual little plant with sweet-scented flowers that come in a nice assortment of spring pastels including purples, pinks, reds (after a fashion), and creams. They are recommended as 'bulb cover' because of their speedy growth. They can go from planting to first bloom in 6 weeks, and then bloom for another month before they get leggy and unattractive. If you have the patience for successive plantings, this may be one to try it with. On the other hand, if your summers are hot, it may not be worth it because malcolmia defintely prefers the cooler weather. However, for the early blossoms, it's well worth it—and for the occasional whiff of fragrance as you walk by.
