For People Who Love To Garden

Tips by the Month

Tips for November

  1. Don't be glum cuz the garden's done!
Not to be obvious, but there might be leaves to rake... You can put some in your compost bin to make nice leaf mold for next year or use some of them as mulch for perennials and shrubs.

  2. Feed your indoor houseplants with a good bloom-inducing fertilizer to get flowers going inside.

  3. If you want an amaryllis to bloom by Christmas, get it started now.

  4. Dahlias won't survive northern winters so dig up your dahlia tubers now and store for the winter in a cool, dark place. James Crockett recommends storing them in a bin with a layer of peat moss and vermiculite so they won't completely dry out.

  5. Try fall sowing some perennials and vegetables, such as pansies, echinacea, onions, and swiss chard (among many others) for spring germination.

  6. Consider making a festive Thanksgiving decoration: a wreath for your door, a centerpiece for your table, or a swag for your mantelpiece (if you have one).
  7. Mulch the crowns of your perennials with dry leaves or pine boughs/needles to protect them from winter cold.

  8. Put your spent pumpkin in the compost bin.

  9. Make your own cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving. Much better than canned.
  10. Hunker down for winter with a cup of contemplative herb tea and a nice gardening book...
