Buying Seeds Online

Growing plants from seed is a great way to try a wide variety of plants not always available at the local nursery. Plus, you have the satisfaction of knowing that your young plants will not be subjected to diseases and pests that can often accompany a plant purchased from the garden center. To begin your seed-buying adventure, here are a few places to try.

  • B and T World Seeds
The strange and wonderful B and T World Seeds have 700 catalogs of 40,000 seeds with an index of 25,000 common names to keep it all straight. This site is deep, and a lot of fun once you figure out its quirks. While they sell to consumers, their prices are a little steep due to the rarity of a lot of their items. Also, the company is located in France, so shipping may be a bit of an issue. Having said that, they do accept credit card orders, and are the place to be for really unusual plant seeds.
  • Burpee Seeds
Order your free catalog from Burpee, or just browse online. They also have a great 3D virtual tour of their test gardens that's worth a visit if you have QuickTime on your computer.

  • Ed Hume Seeds
Specializing in seeds for short seasons and cool climates. Very nice people, with great selection of seeds.

  • Johnny's Selected Seeds
Certified organic flower, herb, and vegetable seeds since 1973. They're based in Albion, Maine.

  • Select Seeds - Antique Flowers
"Select Seeds - Antique Flowers is the catalog for the gardener who enjoys flowers, their fragrance, grace, vigor, history, and unending variety." Selling only heirloom seeds, Select Seeds is "bringing the flowers our grandmothers loved into our gardens once more." Don't miss the rather unassuming link to the on-line catalog for all the seeds they have in stock.

  • Shepherd's Garden Seeds
Shepherd's features a wide selection of flower and vegetable seed, as well as plants. Known for having a great catalog, and lots of unusual plants. Prices slightly above average.

  • Park Seed Co.
Online shopping and a printed catalog that you can order from the web site. Flowers, vegetables, herbs, both seeds and plants, from a well-known and respected source. Lots of hibrids.
  • Wild Seed Farms
Based in Fredericksburg, VA, these guys specialize in wildflower seeds. Free catalog available.
Finally, if you find a promising seed company, you may want to check in and see what others say about their products and services. The Plant By Mail FAQ will let you look up hundreds of mail order plant and seed companies, and view customers' comments about them.
